The Lost Children of Afghanistan

Afghanistan Orphans is a compilation of images by photographer Andrew Xenios. The conditions in Afghanistan at the moment are grave. Those that suffer the most are the children. Faced with no parents, no future, many times no arms and legs, they continue to endure the cruelty “intelligent” people inflict on them. In the dead of winter, these children had no heat, no blankets, no running water, no sanitary bathrooms, no books, not toys, not even a ball to play with.

The slide show was assembled and produced by my wife Jennifer Shore, a photographer in her own right.

Please do not feel sorry for these children. They will survive. Feel sorry for the leaders that brought them to such a fate.

Obama and Nobel Peace Prize

I think you should begin to look at the overall picture of this man. Starting with being a child basically of a single mother. On top of that, a white mother with this little black kid, growing up with many odds against him. eventually he becomes a black senator, then runs for president on the platform of hope, change, and peace in the middle of a disastrous 7 years of Bush, Cheney and crew. The odds again were exaggeratedly against him! His message of peace and diplomacy was attacked by not only republicans, but democrats as well. They both played every “race” card they could. They both tried to smear him into oblivion. None of it worked. After winning the Democratic nomination, every Republican war-smearing-machine under the sun attacked him and his message from every angle possible. He continued his message…change, hope, diplomacy, peace.

In maybe the most startling moment in our history, a black man becomes our president. He becomes president at a time when just about the whole world hates us or at least is disappointed with our conduct over the last 8 years. He becomes our President and immediately opens dialogue and addresses torture, Iran, North Korea, Israeli-Palistinean peace, negative effects of nation-building, gay rights, economic recklessness, fiscal irresponsibility, nuclear proliferation, climate change, education, two wars, the health of our population…all dialogues that came almost to a halt under the past administration.

At the moment, the world has put us once again (according to many independent polls) on the top of the list of admired counties when just one and a half years ago, most thought this was going to be impossible. Obama never thought it was impossible. He convinced us and we sent a message to the world through this man. Why can’t we stand behind him now and be proud of him and ourselves for being a part of his ideas? They are not new ideas, they just happen to be the right ideas…hope, diplomacy, peace!… Read More

Please tell me who, at this moment in time, has done more than this man to bring the world a message of hope and peace? I, am standing behind this man. I am going to be proud that we elected him. I am going to put aside all my differences to try and make this world a better, more peaceful place along with him and along with the Nobel committee that chose him for this important award.

The Old Bookie

The old bookie is delivered to restaurant El Cordobes by his son each morning. He cannot walk any longer, but he likes to be with his friends so his son does his best to make him happy. He opens and closes his tablet imagining that he is “taking book” or lottery numbers, but he is really only looking into his imagination. There are no number, no clients, only his friends that love him, the owner of the cafe that loves him and his son that loves him. In three hours his son will be back to take him home…

*** please note, a photogravure does not seem to reproduce on the internet very well. The actual image is a mysterious, delightful, and beautiful thing to hold in your hands.
